Print Is Not Dead: Zine Fest Houston This Weekend

A famous man once said "Print is dead," and that man was Egon from the Ghostbusters movie, which was filmed over 20 years ago when the word "blog" would have sounded like gibberish. Back then, if you were looking for a substitute to the mainstream media you would have to find it in a "zine," or a short, alternatively published magazine, often photo-copied with a small circulation. Lucky for Houston print is far from dead, especially if the upcoming Zine Fest has anything to say about that.

Zine Fest Houston is an event dedicated to promoting zines, minicomics and other forms of small press, alternative, underground and diy media & art. This year's Zine Fest will occur on May 21st from 4 - 10pm on the rooftop of local drinkery Khon's.

Zine Fest Houston has a mixed past, starting off as a mesh of zines and comics in 2004, and then coming into its own in 2008 as an annual event, despite some location issues. This year's Zine Fest promises to be bigger and more DIYer, currently hosting 24 exhibitors with a "diverse crop of new zines and other projects, plus unique sights and entertainment," live musical acts, a panel discussion and two workshop tables set up for attendees to get their creative-on.

Zine Fest Houston has been growing, but their mission remains as punk rock as ever - "that attendees discover new zines and are inspired to create their own art and media projects."

Zine Fest Houston happens this Saturday, May 21, from 4-10pm on the rooftop of Khon's at 2808 Milam Street, Houston 77006. Admission is free. For more information visit www.zinefesthouston.org
