John Waters' Hairspray Moves to River Oaks In Wake of Angelika's Demise

Categories: Stage

Theatre Under the Stars, trying to promote its upcoming season opener - the musical Hairspray -- had long ago scheduled a special advance event at the Angelika Film Center.

Unfortunately, the Angelika abruptly shut down on Sunday, August 29, leaving TUTS without a home for its inaugural "Creative Conversations" featuring TUTS veteran Jim Bernhard and a panel including original Broadway cast member Rusty Mowery.

TUTS scrambled and got the event moved to the River Oaks Theatre and wants to make sure everyone knows about the switch in location this Wednesday night (September 15).

Patrons can buy their movie tickets and attend the panel discussion at 7 p.m. followed by the 8 p.m. showing of John Waters' 1988 original version on which the musical is based.

Hairspray the Musical will run October 5-17 at the Hobby Center. On Broadway, it won 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical (and Matthew Morrison of Glee played Link Larson in that version).

TUTS is offering several play/dinner special packages during Hairspray's run, but Art Attack especially liked this one:

October 6: Kids Night. An adult buys a full price ticket and gets another ticket free for a kid under 18. Come early, and the kid might win a prize in the Grand Lobby.

Ticket information for Hairspray can be found at www.tuts.com or by calling 713-558-8887 or in person at the TUTS Box Office, 800 Bagby at Walker.
