Tito Puente Jr. headlines
Elevator music. Smooth jazz in your dentist's office. The Kenny G your in-laws spin as they sip chardonnay. All these associations sometimes make us forget the true essence of jazz. This weekend, you can reacquaint yourself with the genre at Discovery Green. The sultry sounds flow through downtown this weekend during the 20th Annual Houston International Jazz Festival, benefiting Jazz Education Inc. Kicking off Jazz Month, the event features an array of artists and jazz styles. Saturday and Sunday, catch live performances 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. each day. A featured performer is mistress-of-jazz-standards Rachelle Ferrell, whose credits include back up vocals Vanessa Williams, George Duke and diva Patti LaBelle. The festival also features Hiroshima, Texas Brass Band, and students from the Summer Jazz Workshop. Latin rhythms reign: This year's headliner is percussionist (and famous progeny) Tito Puente Jr.
